WHAT’S THE PURPOSE OF ANTI-WHALING?

There are people who are eager to bash Japan on the pretext of protecting whales in the world. Anti-whalers condemn Japan for research whaling with one voice. Anti-whalers often become emotional and start bashing not only Japan but also Japanese people. Whaling issue invites racial bias against Japanese people. According to a survey, more than 80% of them are Americans, Australians, British and New Zealanders. They are all from Anglo-Saxon nations.

However, interestingly enough, most of anti-whalers who bash Japan don’t know America and Russia are also whaling nations. They don’t know America and Russia keep commercial whale hunting in the name of aboriginal whaling (subsistence hunting) even though IWC (the International Whaling Commission) prohibited commercial whaling in response to the species’ dwindling numbers in 1986. Properly speaking, they aren’t informed about the reality of American and Russian whaling intentionally.

America and Russia keep whale hunting every year. America and Russia are killing 414 whales in total for one year. Each of these two countries has whale hunting quotas of 67 Bowhead Whales and 140 Gray Whales every year. (134 Bowhead Whales and 280 Gray Whales in total) However, the number of surviving Bowhead Whales (=Greenland Whale) is just only 9,000 in total on the earth at present. Bowhead Whales have already become extinction due to excessive hunting in North Atlantic Ocean. Bowhead Whale has been designated as an endangered species at Washington Convention. The reproductive power of Bowhead Whales is weaker than other types of whales. While the pregnancy period of Minke Whale being subjected to Japanese research whaling is 10 months, the pregnancy period of Bowhead Whale is 13 – 14 months.  A Bowhead Whale’s female gives birth once in 3-4 years. America and Russia should stop hunting Bowhead Whales immediately, or Bowhead Whales will become extinct pretty soon if nothing is done.

I would like to ask IWC, “What is the mission of IWC?” I would like to ask anti-whalers, “What is the purpose of anti-whaling?” I would like to ask Greenpeace, While Greenpeace has been promoting anti-whaling and has been strongly condemning Japan for research whaling, Greenpeace admits subsistence hunting (aboriginal whaling) in America and Russia.  “What do you want to do? Why don’t you condemn America for killing endangered species? What is the raison d’etre (significance of existence) of Greenpeace?”

I asked noted above questions to a few members of Greenpeace many times actually.  They are always eager to escape their responsibility for America’s whaling just because IWC gave approval to aboriginal whaling. I asked them, “Why do you Greenpeace condemn Japan for research whaling that IWC gave approval? Have you forgotten the raison d’etre (significance of existence) of Greenpeace? Why did you Greenpeace admit subsistence hunting to potentially wipe out an animal species? Is Greenpeace the environmental organization or the cultural-preservation group? If you Greenpeace return to the starting line, you should realize what to do immediately. Greenpeace ought to save Bowhead Whales from extinction!” They all always become silent.

I understand…Greenpeace that has been bashing Japan on the pretext of protecting whales has something in the back of their mind. I speak out now that the true purpose of Greenpeace’s anti-whaling was to promote racial discrimination against “Japanese people”. They are genuine racists.

今年１月から始まった日本の捕鯨船に対するシーシェパードとグリーンピースの妨害活動。これまでになく、捕鯨に無関心だった多くの日本人をこの捕鯨という問題を新たな視点でみる機会だったのではないかと思う。かく言う自分もこれまで捕鯨にあまり関心はなく、鯨の肉は東京の鯨料理店で年に１度食べるか食べないか、鯨肉なんてあっても無くても困らないと思っていた。これまで捕鯨のニュースを見るたびに、捕鯨なんて外国と軋轢を起こしてまでする必要があるのかとさえ思っていた。捕鯨を推進し続ける水産庁に対して、日本人にとって迷惑だからはやく止めてくれればいいのにとさえ思う気持ちもあった。

しかしながら、昨年末にYouTubeに「反捕鯨と人種差別」という動画が投稿されて以来、自分はさまざまな事を多くの人々から学んだと思う。最初は自分は「日本びいき」から捕鯨推進派でなくとも捕鯨賛成派をフリをしながら、自分もYouTubeに人一倍、英語で書いた。書くためには当然ながらネタとしての知識が必要。捕鯨に関するいろんなサイトを訪ねながら、自然と知識は増殖していった。また日本の捕鯨に反対する欧米の人間がどのような反応を示すかもある程度パターン化できていった。日本の捕鯨に反対する欧米の人たちの言い分はきわめて感情が先行し、「とにかく日本は鯨をとるな」だった。反捕鯨の彼らはいろんな理由をつけてきた。「鯨は絶滅寸前だから駄目だ」とか「鯨は人間なみの知能を持っているから捕っちゃ駄目だ」とか「日本の調査捕鯨は調査という名を借りた商業捕鯨である」など、われわれ日本人が知らされている捕鯨についての知識とは、まったく異なる知識を持っていた。どちらが正しいのか？さまざまなサイトを検索し、いろんな見解を持っている人たちの文章を読んでいくうちに、何者かが欧米の人たちに日本の捕鯨について歪んだ極めて悪意のこもった情報を与えていることに気づいた。

ノルウェーやアイスランドやデンマーク以外の国、反捕鯨の旗振り役であるアメリカさえも実は捕鯨国なのだ。アメリカは今年1年（2008年）だけでも207頭の鯨を殺そうと計画している。その内訳は、ワシントン条約で絶滅危ぐ種に指定されているホッキョククジラ（Bowhead Whale)67頭とコククジラ(Gray Whale)140頭が含まれている。ホッキョククジラは乱獲のために北大西洋では絶滅したと言われ、現在、地球上には9,000頭しか生息していない。そのホッキョククジラをアメリカだけで67頭、ロシアも67頭、合計134頭を捕獲しようとしているのだ。何のために？IWCではアメリカの強い意向を受け、先住民エスキモーのための「先住民捕鯨」と名づけ、絶滅寸前のホッキョククジラの捕獲枠をアメリカとロシアに与えた。ホッキョククジラは妊娠期間が13～14ヶ月と長く、雌は３～４年に１度しか子供を生まない。ホッキョククジラの繁殖力は他のクジラに比べて非常に繁殖力が弱いのである。ちなみに日本の調査捕鯨の主な対象であるミンククジラが妊娠期間が10ヶ月で繁殖力が強く、現在、50万～70万頭のミンククジラが南氷洋に生息していると推定されている。

私は何度かグリーンピースで反捕鯨を担当しているスタッフ複数人に訊ねた。質問はこうである。「日本の調査捕鯨は駄目で、どうしてアメリカ・ロシアの捕鯨は許容できるのか？」・・・彼らは一同に次のように答える。「日本の調査捕鯨は商業目的である。アメリカ・ロシアの捕鯨は先住民捕鯨ということでIWCでも認められており、グリーンピースでも先住民捕鯨を彼らの文化として尊重している」、さらに私は続ける。「日本の調査捕鯨はIWCでも承認を受けた。アメリカの先住民捕鯨もIWCで承認済みである。であるならば、グリーンピースはこの両方を尊重すべきでしょう？にもかかわらず、なぜ日本の調査捕鯨だけを攻撃するのか？」、彼らは言う。「日本の調査捕鯨は商業目的であり、先住民捕鯨は商業目的ではない」、私はここでたたみかける。「商業目的とは何ですか？インターネットのアラスカのある土産屋のサイトでは鯨の髭とか骨で作った工芸品が売られているんだけど、これって何？日本人は鯨で商売をするなという一方で、アメリカ人は鯨で商売をやっていて、グリーンピースはそれを容認している。しかもワシントン条約でも絶滅危ぐ種に指定されているホッキョククジラを殺しながら、アメリカは商売をやっている。グリーンピースのそもそもの反捕鯨のスタンスって何ですか？グリーンピースさんはいつから文化保護団体になったんですか？そもそも環境保護団体を謳っていたんじゃないの？であれば、なぜ絶滅寸前の野生動物の種を守る運動をやらないのか？アメリカの捕鯨は禁止すべきだと言わないのか？未来の子供たちのために、グリーンピースが数少ないホッキョククジラを守って残そうと、なぜ立ち上がらないんですか！？グリーンピースはいま創設の原点に戻るべきです。さもなくば・・・ただの人種差別主義者と呼ばれることになりますよ」　彼らはこの「人種差別主義者」という言葉に返す言葉なく、一同にため息をつく。なぜならば、図星だからです。
